'United Red Army' directed by Naeem Mohaiemen
The 70 minute film focuses on the negotiations between Dhaka control tower and the lead hijacker. The story also goes through the interlocking histories of 1970s Bangladesh, and postwar Japan and Germany’s crisis facing an increasingly militant far left movement.
Reviewing the film for the Hot Docs Documentary Festival (Toronto), Angie Driscoll wrote: “The filmmaker remembers missing his favorite TV spy show for pre-emptive live coverage of the hostage-taking. Relying almost entirely on radio transmissions between the airport tower and the hijackers, the film displays the interactions as on-screen text. The tension and drama that builds from the clipped verbal exchanges speaks volumes, escalating from polite courtesy to mortal threat.”
The film is directed by Naeem Mohaiemen, and is part of his research on Bangladeshi history. He writes for Bangladeshi newspapers, and was one of the critics of 'Dead Reckoning', Sarmila Bose’s controversial history of 1971. His earlier projects include the film Muslims or Heretics: My camera can lie (2004), about persecution of Ahmadiyas. His photo projects include My mobile weighs a ton (2008, Gallery Chitrak), Otondro Prohori (2009, Chobi Mela), and I have killed Pharaoh I am not afraid to die (2012, Dhaka Art Summit).
