Abdus Salam
Born in 1971
Salam completed his Masters in 1997 from the Institute of Fine Art, Dhaka University. Before he could even get the chance to bask in the popularity of the monocoloured etchings that earned him the coveted National Award in the 13th edition of Young Art Exhibition, 2000, organized by Shilpakala Academy, Salam began working across media. In fact, the new millennium enforced a zeal for exploring the new horizon of possibilities with a view to inscribing the aesthetical with the social. Though concerned with form and its various applications at the onset, he gradually pushed his visual language into the labyrinth of discourses of political and social violence often introducing references to historically fraught spaces. Soon he entered the international art circle through participations in workshops and residencies, thereby diversifying the very process of art-making. Salam’s works have been regularly featured in the major national art events such as the Asian Art Biennale and the National Art Exhibition, organized by Shilpakala Academy. He received the Commonwealth Art and Craft award in 2000; he was awarded a residency at Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in 2007 on the heels of a residency in 2006 at the Jucar Gorges Rural Institute of Art, Alcala del Jucar, Albacete, Spain. Salam had three solo exhibitions abroad: ‘Rejection’ print exhibition, London Print Studio Gallery, London, 2002; an in-residency program exhibition, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Fukuoka, Japan, 2007; and one in the city of Winterthur in Kunstrumm Winterthur, Switzerland in 2009.
