Abdul Halim Chanchal
Born in 1973
Chanchal's series of oil paintings, produced as part of a large installation, and presented in the final submission during his Master's at M S University, Gujrat, India, 2002, was not the first batch of experimental works, but they were clearly his most compelling. After acquiring a Bachelor's in 1994, from the Institute of Fine Art, Dhaka University (now, Faculty of Fine Art), he ventured out in many directions – including the one which was premised on the coupling the academic realism mastered during his study and the conceptual dimension of painting he so ardently developed to formulate his own distinct voice. Though from the very onset, following his passing out from the art institute in Dhaka, he displayed a strong desire to depart from the restrictions of mimesis, his present oeuvres, easily conflate the techniques of realism with the journeying space he tends to create employing a certain conceptual rigour. His offhand way of challenging the existing aesthetic mores has now become his signature. He received the Best Award in miniature painting, at 2nd Tone international miniature competition, Gallery Tone, Dhaka, Bangladesh, 1998; and later awarded an ICCR scholarship in India, in 2000. The body of work he produced in the last ten or so years testifies to his attention to details and brings to fore an alternative stratagem through which he freights his images to the public domain.
